• To get the most from cold water therapy, the balance between temperature and time needs to be just right.
• At 15°C a 10 minute ice bath might be possible, however at 5°C, 3 minutes would be enough!
• You want the coldness of the water to give you a bit of a surprise! But not to push you beyond a safe point. It is important to respect the cold and build up your time submerged slowly.
• On your first attempt you should feel like a champion if you stay in 30 seconds!
• A recent study showed benefits from cold water therapy after just 11 minutes per week in water below 15°C across 2-4 sessions.
• To maximise your benefits, allow your body to warm up naturally, resist the temptation to jump in a warm shower after your ice bath.

Cold water therapy benefits can be achieved from water 15°C or lower, but many people like to plunge into even colder water.

Luckily for us in the UK our cold water taps run between 12-15°C so you will be ready to go as soon as you've filled your ice bath!

In winter, simply left outdoors you will find that your ice bath reaches much colder temperatures, usually between 3-9°C. In summer you can recreate the lower temperatures by adding ice.

How warm or cold it is outside and how many people are using the ice bath will determine how often the water needs to be changed. 

However, as a rule of thumb, we advice once a week.

The ice bath comes with a 3ft extendable hose which can be attached to the side tap to drain the water. However, at Frozen Ape, we have thought of everything! Our side drain tap has been designed to work with a garden hose! Purchase a 1/2inch male thread adaptor and you will be able to attach your garden hose to the side tap. The water can then be drained much further away, or used to water your garden!

Studies have shown there are exceptional health benefits from cold water therapy, however exposure to drastic temperature changes is stressful for the body. It’s especially tough on the circulatory system, which encompasses the heart, blood vessels and lymph system. For this reason, people with heart, blood pressure, and other circulatory issues shouldn’t try cold water therapy without checking with their doctor first. 

In addition, there are certain conditions such as diabetes, retinal damage and epilepsy that could put you at increased risks. Please seek professional advice if you have any medical concerns before using an ice bath.

Submerging your body in cold water also increases your risk of hypothermia. Hypothermia can occur much more quickly in the water because water pulls heat away from the body 25 times faster than air.

Do not use an ice bath if you are pregnant or under 18 years of age.
